A man raped a mother just metres from her sleeping child and then apologised, a court has heard.
But despite his confession, cowardly Jamie Speller pleaded not guilty at trial – but the jury rejected his account and convicted him.
Now 30-year-old Speller, of Riverhead Close, Sittingbourne, has been jailed for five years at Maidstone Crown Court for rape and assault.
Judge Philip St John-Stevens heard how the offences happened more than three years ago.
He praised the victim for her "bravery and dignity" while giving evidence, which he described as "measured".
The jury heard how the victim was in a room where her child was sleeping when she was attacked.
The frightened mother told the jury she felt unable to shout for help because she was frightened of waking the child.
After the attack, Speller told her he was sorry he had forced her, adding he was sorry he had raped her.
The judge said the courage shown by the victim was in contrast to the "lack of bravery" shown by Speller in pleading not guilty to the offences.
After the sex attack, Speller pushed his victim and she fell hitting her head and shoulder.
The trial was delayed because of the Covid lockdown and the victim has had to wait a long time before she can move on with her life, the judge added.
Commenting after the sentencing, investigating officer Detective Constable Hollie Brown said: "After the incidents Speller claimed he was remorseful and that he regretted his actions, however when it came to court he decided to plead not guilty and put the victim through the trauma of a trial.
"The victim has waited a long time to get her justice due to Covid and I wish to commend her bravery and courage."
