A mum says her daughter was just moments away from being crushed by a car after a pile-up.
Last Wednesday (March 12), a driver ploughed into a parked car, which shunted into two other vehicles along Staplehurst Road, Sittingbourne.
The 51-year-old mum, who does not want to be named, says she was at home making dinner at around 7.30pm.
“I got a phone call from my daughter, she was crying her eyes out and told me she’d been in an accident,” she explained.
“I rushed out the front door to our lay-by area, which was full of parked cars.
“Someone had come round the corner – I presume lost control after going too fast – and crashed.
“This pushed the first car into another car, then my daughter's car. It was like dominoes.”
Her 22-year-old daughter, who had been topping up her washer fluid, had only been rummaging in her boot seconds earlier.
She told KentOnline it was a “massive shock” due to how close of a call it had been.
“I heard this bang and as I looked up, all the cars moved forward,” she said.
The impact of the crash pushed the wheel of her car over her foot, which caused her to jump backwards.
Despite this, the pair say it was lucky nothing else happened, as her injuries could have been a lot worse.
“Just a few seconds before and she would have been crushed between the cars,” the mum added.
“She was filling up the washer fluid from the side – imagine if she was doing it from the front.
“I keep thinking, what if she had been there? You just close your eyes and try to get that thought out of your head.”
The speed limit along the road is 30mph, however, the mum claims that many motorists regularly exceed this.
Two police cars arrived at the scene and the driver was searched and breathalysed.
It is understood a passenger was also in the car at the time of the crash.
The mum drove her daughter to Maidstone Hospital the same night and was told she had muscle pain and whiplash.
She added: “During the impact she’d jolted straight back, which is where she'd done her neck in.
“Obviously the shock and adrenaline had gone and she stiffened up quite quickly.”
The daughter took a day off after the incident, but has since gone back to work and is taking paracetamol.
However, she is still struggling to lift heavy items, raise her arms above her head and stand for too long.
The three cars parked in the lay-by that were hit have since been written off.
Police have been conducting inquiries and reviewing CCTV in the area.
A force spokesman confirmed: “Officers attended and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
“Anyone with relevant information, including dashcam footage or CCTV, should contact Kent Police quoting 12-1148.”
