A Greek restaurant near Sittingbourne which was shut down due to coronavirus has been revived by its chef.
To customers’ dismay, The Plough and Harrow taverna in Oad Street, Borden , closed in August this year after owners Lenny and Natalie made the decision to move closer to their family in Cyprus. They said the business was unviable in the age of social distancing.
But now it has been reopened by chef Niko Knight and kitchen staff Elizabeth Quinn as a takeaway.
Niko, of Greek heritage, has worked at the restaurant for around three years after moving from London to work with the previous owner and made the decision after “long consideration and reading everyone’s lovely comments”.
The eatery is currently only open for takeaway, but there are plans to reopen as a restaurant in the future.
The 36-year-old said: “I decided to open it myself after being head chef for the past few years and I didn’t want to stop serving our lovely customers.
“It was a shame to say farewell to Lenny and Natalie on their new adventure, but we can still deliver you a fantastic meal with a lot more additions as well.
'Covid isn’t affecting us too much due to the support of our local community and our loyal customers.'
“We are in the early stages of re-opening and have opened with takeaway to start due to current situation as we want to keep our customers happy and safe."
Elizabeth, 34, said not much has changed since taking on the restaurant.
“Niko is doing the same thing by cooking people excellent food, but just with a little more stress,” she said.
“Covid isn’t affecting us too much due to the support of our local community and our loyal customers.
“We hope we get as much support as we did before and we will keep serving the fantastic food people love and more.”
The restaurant has a 4.5/5 rating on review site TripAdvisor, earning it a ‘Travellers’ Choice’ award and serves Greek favourites, from kebabs to mousaka.
