Two friends have completed a mammoth trek up the UK’s highest mountain in support of a children’s charity.
Sophie La-Haye, 20, and Rachel Walker, 24, took part in Demelza Hospice Care for Children’s Ben Nevis 101 challenge.
The pair reached the summit in about five hours and back down in another four.
Sophie, of Cherryfields, Sittingbourne, a human resources assistant for the charity, said: “It was so much harder than any of us could have expected.
“We thought there would be a path but it was more like rock climbing the whole way.
“I feel so proud – the achievement is incredible. I really enjoyed it – it was amazing.”
Rachel, of Wihtred Road, Bapchild, who worked for Demelza’s voluntary services team until earlier this year, said: “The feeling of completing the biggest challenge of my life was just incredible.
“Thank you so much to everyone who supported me with luck, love and donations – particularly Colwins Motorcycles in Sittingbourne who have given a generous donation.”
A total of 65 people who took on the trek have so far raised more than £72,000 between them, with more donations still to come in.
They were treated to a celebration meal at the end where they were all presented with a medal and a trophy.
Demelza’s events co-ordinator, Emma Austen, said: “Everybody was amazing. It was a lot tougher than we all thought it would be but the whole team supported each other which was fabulous to see.
“I am overwhelmed at the positive comments I’ve had from everyone and the amount of money which has been raised – it will make a real difference to our children and families.”
