Panto prince Robert Brendan ended up with TWO fiancés after proposing to his real-life girlfriend in front of a stunned theatre audience.
The Sheppey actor was celebrating his 35th birthday at Swallows Leisure Centre, Sittingbourne, on Sunday when he broke off the evening performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to serenade his girlfriend who had been sitting in the front row.
Once he had led her onto the stage he dropped to his knees and asked her to marry him.
As the hushed sports hall gasped, he asked Katie Hastings, a 32-year-old ‘scare’ actress who frightens visitors at horror events: “Will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”
At first she giggled nervously, asked “Really?” and then, after a pause, squealed “yes.”
Later she said: “I had no idea. I knew all Robert’s friends and family were in the audience but I thought it was because of his birthday.
Because it was panto, which has loads of audience participation, I thought it might be a birthday thing for Robert when he pulled me out of my seat.”
Robert lives in Romford, Essex, but has been staying with his mum and dad Margaret and Ian Robinson in Sheerness High Street for the panto run. It ends on Saturday – Christmas Eve.
He said: “At the end of the show I get engaged to Snow White, who is played by Kate Greenwood. But this time I also became engaged to my real-life girlfriend Katie.”
He admitted: “During most of the second half I was beginning to have doubts and nearly bottled it. I’d rehearsed singing Katie’s favourite song As The World Falls Down from the film The Labyrinth but I was blubbing like a fish and it sounded dreadful! I didn’t expect to cry quite so much.”
Cast and crew joined in singing Cliff Richard’s Congratulations as the couple embraced.
The pair returned to Sheppey for an after-show celebration party – although Robert had to be up for a 10am matinee the following morning. The couple were introduced by a mutual friend two years ago who invited them to watch the play Ghost Stories in London.
Although Robert’s real name is Robinson he uses the professional name of Brendan so he isn’t confused with the late TV quiz show presenter Robert Robinson.
The panto also stars ex-EastEnders’ actor Joshua Pascoe as Muddles and Victoria Roberts as the Wicked Queen.
Robert was born and bred on Sheppey but because of work commitments had not spent his birthday on the Island for five years.
This is also the first time in 12 years he will be spending Christmas at home with his parents and sister Lorna-Marie Moore.
