A 16-year-old schoolboy and his dad were among thousands of riders taking part in a London to Brighton cycle ride.
Tom and Derek Bennett were among 100 people who entered the fundraiser in support of Bobbing-based Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
Mr Bennett, 54, injured himself in training for the ride – rupturing his knee ligaments. But the pair, of Doves Croft, Tunstall, still managed to complete the 54-mile challenge in less than five hours.
They left Clapham Common, following the route through Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead and Haywards Heath before being welcomed over the finish line at Brighton seafront.
The duo have raised more than £800 for the charity between them. It is hoped the event will raise £10,000 for the hospice.
Mr Bennett said: “There was a great atmosphere and it was good fun. It was a bit difficult with my knee because it locks while I’m going along so I had to pedal backwards to unlock it.
“Tom was brilliant – I reckon he could have done it in about three hours but he kept waiting for me. He really enjoyed it and got the whole way up Ditchling Beacon without getting off.”
Also taking part were friends Richard Usher, from Sittingbourne, and Gary Bradshaw, from Minster, who have raised £700 between them.
Mr Usher, 35, said: “It was a fantastic day. A huge challenge, a lot of fun and a massively rewarding opportunity. Seeing the red banners at the end and all the well-wishers really made it worthwhile.
“I am glad I was able to contribute in a small way to an amazing charity.”
Mr Bradshaw, 37, said he really enjoyed the day and will be supporting Demelza in future because of the amazing work done by the charity.
