People are being asked to move their cars as roads across a borough get a “deep clean”.
More than 50 routes in Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Faversham will be worked on.
It is part of Swale council’s deep clean programme and is for those roads where access for regular cleaning can be difficult due to obstacles such as lots of on-street parking.
Local feedback and data from the authority are used to identify the problem areas.
A deep clean takes approximately two hours. Crews sweep near the kerb and remove any weeds or litter they can’t normally get to.
No parking signs will be put up along each route beforehand and letters will be posted through residents’ doors.
A regular schedule has also been drawn up, focusing on different parts of the borough every Thursday.
Street cleaning has been taking place in Tonge Road, Sittingbourne today (January 9). It will be followed by cleans in Luton Road and Minster Road in Faversham and then Clyde Street in Sheerness next Thursday.
Cllr Rich Lehmann, chairman of the environment and climate change committee, said: “Deep cleans are a way of tackling the dirt and debris that we can’t reach when we’re carrying out our usual street cleans due to parked cars, so we really need people to make sure they move their cars for a few hours when we’re in the area.
“We’ll have signs up in advance, so people know what to expect and we hope they’ll notice a real difference when we’re done.
“We plan to carry out a deep clean every week and will be moving around the borough to make sure as many people as possible see the benefits.
“Our officers are working to identify roads that need a bit more TLC, but we'd welcome suggestions for places that might benefit from a more thorough cleanup.”
