More than 25 floats took part in Sittingbourne Carnival on Saturday but organisers have warned more support is needed for it to continue.
The procession, which included the town’s Sea Cadets band, the Artistic Twirlers, Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway and Sittingbourne Tennis Club, began at Milton Rec and ended in East Street.
The event made £296.14 – an improvement on last year by £25. But carnival association chairman Pam Griggs says the carnival could stop altogether because the money raised is not enough to keep it going.
She said: “The collection, we’re sorry to say, was very low once again. This year was well below the £700 to £800 we used to collect when finishing in Swanstree Avenue.
“It’s not good when you think of the size of Sittingbourne and it just shows how much we need to do in terms of other fundraising efforts to get this to run and continue year after year.
“It’s disheartening really. We put in so much work and it makes you question is it really worth it?
“If people really want our carnival to continue then more people need to get behind us and support it.”
All in all, Mrs Griggs said the carnival was good – albeit small.
“The parade was quite short again but most feedback has been favourable, saying it was good for what there was of it,” she said.
“It’s only the businesses and local people who can make it bigger and better in future years.
"The Carnival Association cannot make people take part – it has to be voluntary and also a good way of advertising a local business.”
She added: “I would like to say thank you to everyone who did enter and we hope they all really enjoyed themselves.”
Next year’s carnival is due to be held on Saturday, June 23.
