A pilot recycling scheme could be introduced to Sittingbourne High Street.

Swale council is currently investigating the possibility of putting conventional blue wheelie bins for cans and plastic bottles in several locations in a bid to encourage shoppers to recycle their drinks packaging.

Scrutiny committee members raised concerns during a recent meeting that it could encourage anti-social behaviour in the town centre but the recycling and waste minimisation officer explained that the area would be monitored at weekends and evenings and the bins would be made secure.

A spokesman for the council said: "It’s an idea based on the fact that a high proportion of material in litter bins are cans and plastic bottles so it seems to make sense to recycle these and a High Street would be a sensible place to target that."
