A grandmother has set herself the challenge of reaching the Mount Everest base camp.
Christine Spicer is already in training for the 13-day trek – which will see her walking between five and 11 hours every day while carrying a heavy backpack. The camp is 5,150m above sea level.
The 62-year-old, of Swan Close, Murston, said: “The programme I’m following is designed to develop stamina and build muscular strength.
“I am walking two hours each Monday, Wednesday and Friday incorporating an exercise circuit after each walk. Then I’m taking longer walks on a Saturday or Sunday, once a month walking both days to help build endurance.
“I’m very excited about it. I’ve only got 18 weeks left. My friends and family think I’m mad but I enjoy it because I enjoy giving to people.
"I get extreme pleasure from helping others and I love a challenge. I’ve done two treks already.”
The businesswoman, who runs Abbagail Cleaning Services, said: “I did Kilimanjaro in 2011 and raised £7,000 for Meningitis Research Foundation and also Machu Picchu in Peru, but I wasn’t raising money. I felt like something was missing then.
“I couldn’t do a bungee jump because there’s no training for it and it’s over and done with too quickly.” So far, she has raised more than £930. Her target is £4,000.
As Christine is funding the trip herself, all the money will go to the charity Sparks which funds pioneering research into medical conditions affecting the health of babies, children and mums-to-be.
In a bid to boost funds, Christine is holding a fun day at The Plough in Lewson Street, Norton, between 2pm and 5pm this Sunday.
There will be live bands, a bouncy castle, face-painting, penalty shootout, egg and spoon race, tombola, tug-of-war, a barbecue plus Disney characters.
Entry is free. Collection boxes will be available for people to donate their loose change. To make a donation online visit www.justgiving.com/christine-spicer
