Pupils set for visit to Auschwitz

By Hayley Robinson

Pupils will learn about the horrors of war during a visit to the Auschwitz concentration camps.

Two youngsters from Sittingbourne Community College and two from Fulston Manor School will be among 200 youngsters from 100 schools across the UK who will travel to Poland tomorrow as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

During their visit the students will visit Oswiecim, the Polish town next to where Auschwitz-Birkenau was built, visit Auschwitz which forms part of the State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau, be guided around Birkenau and end their visit with a commemorative ceremony at Crematorium II.

A follow-up seminar, where participants will discuss the visit, their personal responses and the impact it had on them, will be held in London on Sunday, November 22.

As a result of participating in the project, students will become ambassadors in their own communities raising awareness of the past and challenging prejudice and racism today.
