More than 150 children aged between seven and 11 entered a limerick competition organised by Fulston Manor.
But there could only be one winner. Assistant head teacher Karen Franks and events and publicity manager Sarah Palmer visited Bobbing Primary School where they surprised pupil Joshua Bass with the news that he had won the competition.
The Year 6 youngster wrote this limerick:
“There once was a soldier named Dunn.
Who thought going to war would be fun.
He wanted to fight.
With all of his might.
But was afraid to fire his own gun.”
Mrs Franks said: “It was a really tough decision as all of the primary schools submitted some great rhymes but Joshua won because it was such a poignant time to write a limerick about the war, being the First World War centenary.”
Budding poet Joshua earned a Kindle Fire tablet as the prize for his winning rhyme.
