Employees at the Bay Leaf Cafe, Roman Square, wore pink clothing to work on FridayJuly 13 and

SaturdayJuly 14, and sold raffle tickets to customers over the two days, to help raise sponsorship money for staff member Nina Johnson.

The 42 year old is set to climb Ben Nevis in September in aid of Breast Cancer Care and needs to raise a minimum of £500 to take part in the event.

She will be joined on the day by her friend Melanie Clark, 44, from Sittingbourne.

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain, rising 1,344 metres (4,406 feet) amid the hills of the Scottish Highlands.

The route up and down it totals a little over nine miles, but because of the sometimes rocky and uneven terrain, participants will be on the mountain for the majority of the day.

In preparation for the challenge Nina, of Bell Road, Sittingbourne, has joined Swallows Gym, Central Avenue, where she works out two times a week.

She also goes for long walks and climbs nearby hills to get herself fit for the event.

The married mum of two said: “Over the two days we raised £230 through the raffle and donations. We had some great prizes which had been donated to us by various local businesses.

“They included a pink ukulele from Swade Music, a cream tea at Bay Leaf Cafe courtesy of my bosses Maria May and Joanne Povey, and a free hair cut at Smiffy’s barbers.

“I’ve also raised £100 by doing a boot fair the other week and a further £35 after I invited people to pay a £1 and pick which bonus ball would be drawn in one of the National Lottery draws for the chance to win a teddy bear.

“I’m really looking froward to doing it. I just need to get the last bit of money in. We plan to do more fundraising over the coming weeks.”

To help Nina raise her target, donations and/or raffle prizes can be dropped into the cafe which is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 3pm.
