A man who carried out a terrifying and "degrading" attack on an 18-year-old woman has been jailed indefinitely for public protection.
David Moore was told by a judge that the sentence was "almost indistinguishable" from serving life.
The 24-year-old, of London Road, Sittingbourne, will stay behind bars for four years before the parole board first considers whether it is safe to release him.
Maidstone Crown Court heard that Moore had earlier made unwelcome advances to another girl and meted out violence before randomly selecting his victim and repeatedly raping her.
He admitted six charges of rape and two of assault by penetration on the girl and robbery and four charges of assault causing actual bodily harm on other victims.
Jonathan Higgs, prosecuting, said Moore lay in wait in Rainham on October 28 last year. He attacked his victim, threatened to stab her and dragged her into an underground car park.
He told her if she kept quiet and co-operated, he would let her go. As well as being raped, she was made to perform other sex acts.
"This was a sustained and degrading attack, which no doubt would have continued if it had not been interrupted by two members of the public," said the prosecutor.
Moore had a long list of previous convictions and served three years youth custody in 2001 for attempted robbery.
Judge Martin Joy said Moore subjected the rape victim to "a sustained period of sexual degradation".
