Ringside seats for boxer Billy's Kent premiere

Boxer Billy Rumbol's debut film is to be premiered in Kent next month - in his home town.

Risen - the true story of the boxing career and life of Welshman Howard Winstone, who became world featherweight champion in 1968, aged 29 - will be shown at the Avenue Theatre, Sittingbourne, on Saturday, May 7.

Billy was picked to play the part of British featherweight champion Terry Spinks in the film, which starred Stuart Brennan, EastEnders' Shane Ritchie, John Noble and Helen Griffin.

As we exclusively revealed last month, Billy, 19, is due to start filming his second film, The Reverend, in which he plays an ultimately doomed gang member with a conscience.

It was Avenue Theatre chairman Garth Spann who secured the Sittingbourne venue as the first in Kent - and only the second in the country - to screen the 90-minute movie.

After reading the Kent Messenger story about Billy's role, Mr Spann contacted director Neil Jones to request permission to show the film - due out on general release between April 29 and May 13.

The 7.30pm premiere at the 88-seater theatre, in Avenue of Remembrance, with Billy's family and friends expected to turn out in force. If demand for tickets is high, an earlier screening will be laid on at 5pm.

Neil Jones will introduce the film, which will be followed by a question and answer session with two of the film's actors.

"It's important to screen films with local acting talent and with Billy being in it, we're hoping it will go down well," said Mr Spann.

The decision to premiere Risen in Sittingbourne has delighted the local boy.

"I was surprised when I found out but really pleased," Billy said. "It's good that it's going to be in my home town and I'm looking forward to it. It should be a good night."

Tickets, priced £4, are available from the box office on 01795 471140 or via www.avenuetheatre.co.uk
