Lillie Swain’s mother lost her battle against cancer only six months after being diagnosed.
Inspired by the seven-year-old’s strength and courage following her devastating loss, fellow pupils and staff at Westlands Primary School arranged a sponsored run in memory of the 31-year-old, who died last September.
Accompanied by her grandmother Carol Twyman and her aunt Emma Twyman, the Year 3 youngster opened the race by cutting loose 30 pink and purple balloons while holding a photo of her mum Sally.
Teachers and children, who all wore an item of pink clothing on the day, then ran as many laps as they could of the school field in 30 minutes to raise money for Cancer Research.
The money is still being counted but Lillie, who is an only child, has raised more than £300 so far.
She said: “I was a bit nervous and laughed when I was cutting the balloon ribbons. I ran all the way.”
Her teacher Michelle Oswald added: “I am so proud of the whole school, in particular Year 3, and most especially Lillie, whose strength and constantly smiling courage has been an inspiration for us all – staff and pupil alike.
“Events like this are a tremendous way for the school to embrace the local community.”
Emma added: “This has been tremendous for all and we are extremely grateful for the number of donations being made for Cancer Research which is a fantastic cause.
“I also would like to thank Mrs Oswald and Westlands Primary School for organising this.”
