A TEENAGE scooter rider from near Newington, near Sittingbourne, died last night in a crash on the A249 near Bobbing.

The 18-year-old was travelling on the Sheppey bound carriageway when his red Gilera machine was involved in a collision with at least one car.

Police say a green Fiat Brava car and possibly another car were involved. The dual carriageway is unlit at the section where it happened just before 9pm.

The road was blocked between the Stockbury roundabout and the Key Street roundabout for six hours while investigations were carried out. Police confirmed that the teenager dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, believed to have left the scene before the arrival of the police, was later found by officers and enquiries are ongoing to establish if the vehicle was, in fact, involved in the incident.

Acting Chief Inspector Tony Henley said: “This is a tragic incident which will be fully investigated. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

“It is important that we can create a clear picture of the incidents leading up to the collision and ask that anyone who may have information that will be able to help us with this investigation to contact us as soon as possible.”

The scooter rider’s identity has not yet been released. An inquest will be held.
