A dad is out to prove many a good tune is played on an old fiddle and has released a CD two years shy of his 60th birthday.
Martyn Wood, of Belmont Road, Sittingbourne, has discovered a latent talent for songwriting, the results of which can be found on his latest album, Seconds Out.
It’s a joint creation with friend and workmate John Hedley-Cheney, and a cleverly-titled follow-up to their debut, Pandora’s Hamper.
The pair joined musical forces 18 months ago. Both are security guards at Gatwick Airport and it was Martyn’s love of a sing-song at work that drew them together.
The dad-of-three said: “John’s a guitar and keyboard player and we started recording Beatles covers in his back room.
“After a while we thought we’d have a go at doing our own songs.
“I’m really proud of what we’ve written, but I’m too old to be a pop star.”
Martyn and John are not only in it for fun, they are also making money for charity.
So far, CD sales among friends, family and work colleagues have helped raise nearly £800, which will be divided between Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Bobbing, and St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley, near to where John lives.
Martyn describes the 12 tracks as a mixed bag of ballads and boppy numbers.
His only regret at having taken the musical plunge is that it took him so long to do it.
He said: “We want to show we can write some decent songs, and if we can raise some money for charity as well, then it’s a win-win situation.
“I’d just wish I’d met John 30 years earlier.”
Copies of Seconds Out are on sale for £4 at Demelza’s Rook Lane premises.
