The heritage museum in East Street, Sittingbourne, needs new storage space to house its increasing number of artefacts.
Members are calling for the donation of an empty mobile or cabin which will be installed in the site’s back garden.
A similar appeal in 2002 yielded a portable building which was donated by a supermarket and transported by Bobbing Car Breakers – both free of charge.
Referring to the companies’ generosity, Peter Morgan, the museum’s former chairman, said: “That lesson has taught me there are very many good people around to help us.
“I’m now looking for a building firm or property developer who has a cabin they no longer want.
“We have space in our garden to take one small cabin, not more than 20ft long and 11ft wide, which would help us with our storage problem at the museum.”
The centre opened 12 years ago after shop space was donated by Sittingbourne optician, John Frewin. Since then it’s taken on a vast amount of memorabilia, spawning a number of exhibitions, the latest of which was a history of Girlguiding in the town.
Mr Morgan, 87, from Park Road, said with little chance of finding a bigger venue, the only option is to maximize space at the current building.
“That’s the problem,” he said. “It’s the collection, not the museum, that grows.”
