Supermarket shoppers were shocked when a man wearing camouflage, dog tags and appearing to carry a gun entered the store.
Customers described the moment - around 4pm yesterday - when a man and woman entered Lidl in Sittingbourne at the height of shopping hours.
One witness said: "The man was in full camouflage gear, sunglasses, dog tags and a holster which appeared to have a gun in it. Immediately several customers alerted staff."
The customer said someone who appeared to be the manager alerted security and then went with two other staff into a room.
Shoppers were said to have phoned police before the "gunman" and his companion left the store and headed in the direction of the high street.
The witness said: "Shortly after my son rang me from the high street stating police were everywhere and said the man was with police."
Police confirmed the incident, saying they had been called out at 4.15pm, to reports of a man suspected to be in possession of a firearm.
A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm.
He was later cautioned by police and released.
Lidl was contacted for a response, but has so far not commented.
