Shoppers stock up on the essentials as more snow is predicted

By Hayley Robinson

Bread, milk and table salt has been flying off the shelves at the Sittingbourne branch of Sainsbury's.

With more snow expected over the next few days many people decided to brave the freezing conditions to pick up their essential supplies, although panic buying begun at the beginning of the week according to customer services advisor Shirley Young.

Mrs Young said: "Customers have been snapping up the essentials such as bread and milk and we haven't limited the amount customers can buy.

"All the salt has gone as people want to put it on their driveways and when that ran out customers started buying dishwasher salt. Nappies and toilet roll have also been popular.

"We still have bread and milk at the store because our delivery lorry managed to get through the snow last night.

"Monday was when people started panic buying though. We sold out of veg on Tuesday - I don't know what that was all about, and yesterday we'd sold out of everything.

"We have a delivery everyday and as far as I know we will have a delivery this evening."

Earlier today the store had to be evacuated after its automatic fire alarm sounded.

Customers and staff were forced to stand out in the freezing cold and wait for Sittingbourne firefighters to arrive when the alarm sounded at about 10.15am.

Luckily it proved to be a false alarm and everyone was allowed back in the store just before 11am.
