Sittingbourne manager Gary Abbott says beating Folkestone Invicta in the Kent Senior Cup final was consolation after missing out on the Ryman League Division 1 South play-offs for the second successive time.

The Kent Senior Cup success was Abbott's first as Brickies manager and he said: "It was well deserved and nice to get something out of the season. Hopefully, it’s the first of many.

"We had five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes but it was quite even until Jimmy Jackson (Folkestone Invicta) wandered into the box and smashed home a great goal. All three of our goals were scored in the goal where our supporters were. We had a good following and it was nice for them."

Abbott also paid tribute to top scorer Hicham Akhazzan, who was one of the scorers in Tuesday's final.

"For Hicham to score 28 goals as a winger is tremendous. He is quick with an eye for goal and I’m surprised nobody has come in for him. He is a nice lad, who is not money-orientated at all."

He added: "I want to keep everyone next season but I haven’t spoken to Andy Spice (chairman) about what’s happening next season."

Sittingbourne are set to announce the winner of the draw to become next season’s new club sponsor on Saturday.
