Smoke billows into sky as firefighters tackle blaze in School Lane, Iwade

Firefighters tackled a blaze in Iwade that sent huge plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

Four fire engines and a water carrier were called to reports of a shed alight in School Lane at about 1.34pm.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from Sittingbourne and the Sheppey Crossing, and also in Rainham – nearly seven miles away.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "A large pile of rubbish alight had spread to a nearby shed and an outbuilding.

"Crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze."

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is not known at this stage, the spokesman added.

Crews made the area safe before returning to the station shortly before 3.30pm.
