Two mums who are looking to bring back the Sheerness Christmas Carnival in 2015 have decided to get involved in festive activities this year.
Stephanie Heaton and Nicola Bidgood wanted to see a return of the family favourite, which used to be held in the town centre in the 1980s and ‘90s, after lamenting the fact their children were missing out on the memories they enjoyed growing up.
The duo held their first meeting at the Belle and Lion in Sheerness High Street last Wednesday.
They were joined by fellow mum Kristina Webb, John Nurden, chairman of the Sheerness Town Team and Chris Foulds, of Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure (SEAL).
After initially deciding to wait until Christmas 2015 to put activities on, they have now decided to tie their efforts in with existing plans this year.
They will mainly hope to focus around the clocktower by arranging carol singers, mulled wine and mince pies on November 29 from 10am to 4pm to coincide with SEAL’s switching on of the lights.
The group is looking for a snow queen, who can be anyone over the age of 18, who will walk with the planned lantern parade to the clocktower beforehand.
The town team has pledged funding to close off Broadway.
The Belle and Lion has also agreed to let the group turn its garden into a grotto.
However, the ladies need to have a shed to place there and are asking the public for help in finding one and getting it in place.
They would also like to hear from anyone who is prepared to take on the role of Father Christmas.
Miss Heaton, 34, said: “Not as many people turned up as we would have hoped but we’re hoping to see how we go this year with just little things and then next year it will be bigger and better.
“If we do a good job this year and if we get a longer period of time it will be even better.”
