Squatters are believed to have been living in a block of garages which were completely destroyed by fire.
The remains of four mattresses, food, crockery, sleeping bags, a microwave, a fridge and a freezer were found by firefighters after they dealt with the blaze which broke out in three garages off Roman Square just before 3am on Sunday.
Fire crews from Sittingbourne and Teynham arrived to find 15ft flames coming through the roof of the building.
There were fears that a person may have died in the fire after a pair of trainers were found in an odd position suggesting someone had fallen forward. But despite a thorough search nobody was found.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
The police were contacted to secure the affected garages and Swale council was asked to send an inspector to the scene as the building is now unsafe.
