Tesco's bold plans for town centre

By Hayley Robinson

Supermarket giant Tesco has unveiled its ambitious plans for Sittingbourne.

Proposals include a Tesco Extra and 11 new retail stores on land north of the railway with a bridge linking them to the town centre and an extension to the Forum shopping centre and improvements to its current entrances.

Under the plans, a Tesco Metro would be located in the former Somerfield shop in the centre, which is owned by Tesco, and a new hotel, restaurants and cafes would form part of the new public square.

There would also be the potential for new council offices, new homes north and south of the railway and a new multistorey car park.

Energy-saving technology would also be used at the new Tesco stores in Sittingbourne.

Roof panels and glazing would be installed to allow plenty of natural light into the store reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Sustainable building materials, such as using wood instead of metal for the store’s frame and cladding, will be used saving a tonne of carbon for every cubic metre produced and rainwater will be collected from the roof of the store to flush the toilets.

An artist’s impression of the plans which have been drawn up by Spenhill – the regeneration arm of Tesco – is currently on display at 34 High Street, Sittingbourne.

A company spokesman said: "It has been recognised for some time that Sittingbourne is in need of regeneration to bring new homes, more shops and leisure to unite the town centre, making it a destination for residents and visitors.

"Our proposals for Sittingbourne have been through many phases including extensive consultation with the council, stakeholders and, of course, the public.

"We believe that our plans reflect the current demand for retail and leisure in Sittingbourne.

"We have come a long way and have brought you a scheme that is deliverable."

People’s views are now being sought on the proposals.
