A breast cancer survivor’s sponsored walk has raised nearly £2,000 for charity.

Sarah Bourne was diagnosed with a non-invasive form of the disease in February last year after she noticed blood coming from her nipples.

After undergoing two lots of surgery and a course of radiotherapy, she has since been given the all-clear.

To give something back, the married mum-of-two organised a 26-mile ‘Walk of Life’ in aid of Breast Cancer Care and Cancer Research.

The nursing sister, who works at Maidstone Hospital A&E, was joined by 18 of her colleagues when she set off from her home in Windmill Road, Sittingbourne, at 6am, on June 28.

Sue Gledhill, of Carmel Caterpillars Pre-School in Ufton Lane, where Mrs Bourne works on a Friday, and Rowena Wood, the inclusion manager at Milton Court Primary Academy, where her daughters Lucy, seven, and Amy, five, are pupils, also took part.

It took them nine hours to complete the route, which led them through Sittingbourne, Newington, Rainham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Borstal, Wouldham (where a further seven people joined the group), Burham, Eccles, Aylesford and Maidstone, where they finished with a big celebration in Mote Park.

Mrs Bourne’s dad, Derek Pevier, drove a support vehicle.

In all £111 of the total amount raised was donated by passers-by dropping loose change in a collection bucket.

The 37-year-old said: “It was fantastic.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support. I wanted to raise £1,000, and it’s gone over that which is fabulous.

“I’d also like to thank the Red Bull pub in Eccles and the Premier Inn in Gillingham, who let us use their toilets. The Premier Inn also gave ice cold water to everyone.

“It was hot to begin with but there were some showers along the way, which helped cool us down.”
