A fundraiser to support a fire-ravaged school has raised more than £6,000 in just three days for new supplies and equipment.
Four fire engines and a crane were called to Rodmersham Primary School, near Sittingbourne, on Thursday evening after a blaze ripped through the building.
Crews spent two hours fighting the flames, which had taken hold of, and badly damaged, the roof.
The fire service has not yet confirmed the cause.
The school was due to welcome back pupils on Wednesday next week but KCC says the building cannot be used at all.
A statement on the school’s website today states online learning will be provided until at least Friday while a longer term premises and solution can be found.
Parents will be updated this week about future arrangements, the school says.
Blue tarpaulin had been placed over a large section of the roof which was being repaired during half-term week.
Swale borough councillor Monique Bonney, who represents the village, described the incident as “absolutely heartbreaking” on the night of the fire.
She attended the school herself and her son was also a pupil there.
Writing about the response to the fundraiser, which has a £10,000 target, Cllr Bonney praised the community’s response.
She said: “Gosh the community are just so amazing, thank you for supporting the Go Fund Me for Rodmersham School - and other offers of help/assistance they are all gratefully received by the school. There is just so much to do.
“In the meantime if you live nearby please keep you eyes peeled - look out for the school.
“If you see anyone attempting to gain access to the school or looking suspicious, particularly out of hours please contact the police immediately.”
A post by the fundraising page’s organisers said: “Any donations of any amount gratefully received will go to putting things back together and keeping this fantastic little school a happy place to be whilst the repairs take place.”
The fire service has been approached for further comment.
