Kent and former England cricketer Geraint Jones visited children at Minterne Junior School.
The wicket-keeper talked about the charity Chance to Shine, which promotes cricket nationwide and teaches youngsters sportsmanship.
The 36-year-old, who was part of the 2005 England winning Ashes team, also discussed his career during a school assembly.
Head teacher Bill McGrory said: “The sporting message is to support children and show good sportsmanship for the other team and not to crow about your own ability.
“The visit also encouraged other children [to get involved in cricket] and I think they have taken on this message.”
Members of the school’s cricket team were able to have a practice session with Mr Jones, who has played for the county since 2001.
He was happy to help the children improve their batting and catching techniques.
Mr McGrory watched the practice and said: “At the end of the day he was hitting the ball up high so the children could try and catch him. It was fascinating to watch.”
Former England footballer Gareth Southgate has also visited the school in the past to talk to pupils and teachers.
Mr McGrory added: “It is really good for the children to see their heroes, they are very modest about their accomplishments and I think they are real ambassadors for their sports.”
