A new bus ‘hub’ in Sittingbourne is finally set to open this month after the project was dogged by delays.
Designed to be a central pick-up and drop-off point, the area next to The Forum shopping centre has been developed as part of the Spirit of Sittingbourne town centre regeneration project.
It was first due to open in October but that was postponed due to “complications” including the weather, which meant the work wasn’t completed on time.
An opening in November was delayed after bus company bosses raised concerns about safety.
Now the area is expected to open in the week beginning Monday, March 16 and new additions include pedestrian crossings and extra signs.
A Spirit spokesman said: “In designing the bus area, we have worked with local bus operators and Swale council to ensure the customer experience is as quick and easy as possible.
“We look forward to the area opening, making commuting in and out of the town centre easier than ever.”
Cllr Monique Bonney (Ind), the council’s cabinet member for economy and property, said she was pleased the town would finally have a dedicated area for bus services.
“Buses are essential for bringing people back into the town without clogging up the roads and this new area will provide easier access for visitors and shoppers using public transport,” she added.
Roland Eglinton, managing director of Chalkwell Coaches, said the firm had worked with Spirit and the council to deliver a bus area that would operate “efficiently and effectively” for its customers.
“The new hub includes additional signage and signified crossings, which will make the area safer and easier to use,” he added.
“We very much look forward to the hub opening, and to our buses being able to access this new facility, which should improve the overall user experience for all of our customers.”
Oliver Monahan, managing director of Arriva Kent and Surrey, added: “Arriva’s customers can look forward to a new and improved experience.
"Bus journeys in and out of the town centre will be even easier than before.”
