A four-month plan of roadworks in Sittingbourne has been postponed for another two weeks.
The road closures, which were due to start yesterday, have been suspended.
This is so traffic diversion routes can be confirmed, and to make changes to temporary bus stops by the railway station and Forum shopping centre.
A Swale council statement said "The next phase of works in the Spirit of Sittingbourne regeneration programme commenced today.
"However, following feedback from town centre businesses and the general public we are pausing the advertised road closures.
"Work on site has also been impacted by today's heavy rainfall.
"This short pause will still allow us to reopen the A2 by the time schools return in September."
The planned roadworks will include the closure of the station end of Dover Street, Milton Road and St Michael's Road as well as the section of Station Street running parallel to St Michael's Road.
Residents and those who drive frequently around the area are advised to plan ahead and review their journey to minimise disruption over the next four months.
The aim of this scheme is to allow greater access to Sittingbourne.
Speaking on the Sittingbourne Me website, Andy Hudson said: "After the fiasco of the phase one road closures which resulted in incorrect information being given out, you would have thought that they would have learned from their mistakes so it is regrettable to find ourselves once again in exactly the same boat."
The roadworks will begin again on June 11.
