Emergency services called to Sittingbourne Railway Station

Trains are now back up and running through Sittingbourne Railway Station after armed police officers were called.

The emergency response was prompted at about 2.15pm following a report that a distressed man may be travelling on a train towards the town.

A police spokesman said: "The man had made threats to harm himself with a weapon and the armed officers were deployed as a precaution.

"The man was not located and enquiries remain ongoing."

Southeastern tweeted to say the power had to be switched off at Sittingbourne at about 3.10pm while police dealt with the incident at the station, which had to be evacuated.

However, the power was switched back on 20 minutes later and, shortly before 4pm, trains were running through Sittingbourne in both directions – although disruption is expected until 5pm.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "Thanks for your patience while we allowed the emergency services to attend this incident."
