Upchurch villagers offer huge support to Post Office owner Praful Jadeja held up by armed raider

Villagers have rallied round to ensure the safety of a Post Office owner after he was held up at gunpoint.

Every night since the attack, residents have been taking it in turns to sit outside Upchurch newsagents in their cars to ensure Praful Jadeja is safe as he closes up.

The 51-year-old was working alone and stocking shelves when he was targeted at just before 6.30pm last Wednesday.

When he turned around, he came face-to-face with a balaclava-clad man who pointed a gun at him and started shouting: "Give me all the money."

Terrified Mr Jadeja pleaded with the man "not to do anything stupid".

With the weapon aimed at him, he backed up to the counter where he opened the till and handed over all the notes - estimated to be between £500 an £600.

He was not hurt, but the incident left him frightened and shaken. It also shocked the community.

"They come in and say 'don't worry - we're sitting outside', then they wait until I leave in my car. It's very nice of them and I'm very grateful for their help..." - shop owner Praful Jadeja

The married father-of three, who has run the business for the last four years, said: "The police came and saw me for the first two nights after it happened.

"At the moment I am scared. I'm not alone in the shop anymore. I have staff with me at all times and local people are helping when I close.

"A couple of people take it in turns sitting outside in their car looking out for me as I lock up.

It is believed the offender ran off with a second man who was waiting outside the shop.

Armed police and a helicopter called to the scene on the night were unable to find them.

The raider is described as about 6ft, white, wearing denim jeans and a blue hoodie and as having a local accent.

No arrests have been made and there is no update on the investigation from Kent Police.

Mr Jadeja added: "I find it hard to believe someone could come in here with a gun asking for money. It's really, really scary how anyone can do this. It's awful.

"I have trust in the police finding him. He must be caught and punished."
