Swale council and Southern Housing held a tree-planting day last Monday.

It aimed to increase tree cover for biodiversity and boost the health and wellbeing of families, dog-walkers and other park users.

However, nearby resident Sheree Shez Linn noticed the damage this morning and posted some pictures on her local Facebook group.

She said: "I use the park twice every day and was walking my dog at 6.50am.

"It must have been done yesterday at some point. So sad, people worked hard doing that."

A number of people commented under the pictures, expressing their frustration at the situation.

One said: "Just why? These were planted for the benefit of the younger generation, why would anyone want to destroy them?

"I hope who ever did this has been picked up on the cameras and is made to pay!"

Another added: "This must be heartbreaking for the people that put all the hard work in."

Cllr Steve Davey also commented on the post, saying that the damage was "noted over the weekend" and will be repaired tomorrow.

A spokesman for Swale Borough Council said: “It’s massively upsetting and frustrating for all those involved in trying to improve the park, and the wider local environment, when people do something like this.

“We’ve spent time and money trying to create a space that will be a benefit for generations to come.

“It’s hard to conceive of the levels of selfishness and petty small-mindedness that those responsible have, but we won’t let their idiotic behaviour spoil the park for everyone else.”

Southern Housing added: "We’re extremely disappointed by the vandalism to the new tree plants in Milton Recreation Ground.

"We’ll continue to work closely with all partners to improve biodiversity in our local communities and raise awareness of the positive effects of nature on wellbeing.

"We support our partners in their efforts to ensure our residents’ parks remain safe spaces for all to enjoy."
