Villagers have been told to keep their windows closed as a huge plume of smoke drifts over their homes.
Two fire crews were called to an out-of-control bonfire in Raspberry Hill Lane, Iwade near Sittingbourne at 2.16am and have been making the area safe. One fire engine is still on site.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said at 9.20am: "People living in Iwade village are advised to close windows and doors as a precaution, due to smoke coming from a fire in Raspberry Hill Lane.
"One fire engine remains at the scene to maintain a watching brief as it burns itself out under controlled conditions. As a result, a smoke plume may been seen in the area."
There are no reported casualties but the spokesman said the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.
Cllr Mike Whiting, who is on both Swale council and Kent County Council, said: "The biggest issue in my postbag at the moment is the burning of waste at Raspberry Hill Farm.
"I am in discussions with Swale Council, KCC, the Environment Agency and the police about this and have also today included the director of public health in Kent as I see this as much a health issue as one related to planning or illegal activity.
"The thick black smoke means people are having to close their windows and live indoors to escape the potentially toxic fumes.
"If anyone has any views on this, particularly if they have photos/video or any other evidence, then I'd be happy to receive them and pass them to the relevant authorities."
