The weather didn’t stop Gore Farm from celebrating National Apple Day. Crowds of people arrived in their wellies and raincoats at the site in Oak Lane, Upchurch.

The free event last Saturday and Sunday, was an opportunity for visitors to go behind the scenes of one of Sainsbury’s main apple growers – A C Goatham and Son.

As well as walking through the orchards, guests were able to meet the growers, taste fresh juices and talk with experts about the supermarket giant’s commitment to British fruit.

Other attractions included samples of hot apple pie dished up by the Bramley campaign and cookery demonstrations using recipes inspired by Kentish and British grown apples.

There was also face painting and pumpkin carving to keep the children entertained.

Also on hand were Kent Wildlife Trust, a partner of Gore Farm, and Kent based fruit marketing companies, Norman Collett Ltd, Chingford Fruit Ltd and Worldwide Fruit.

Organiser Sarah Calcutt said: “The weather caused some challenges for anyone enjoying the celebrations.

“We were delighted to see a good number of people who came prepared to tour the orchards, meet the Sainsbury’s Try team and enjoy their cooking.

“Visitors also took time to view the display of the best of British apples and pears in the main marquee.

“Visitor numbers were down on those anticipated but those who did come learned a lot, the children had a lot of fun and lots of apples went home with them.”
