People are being warned not to leave grass cuttings in bags near their homes.
It comes as firefighters were sent to Canterbury Road, Sittingbourne, at about 7.45pm yesterday.
Gardeners had stored grass cuttings in a bag, near their garage, when it spontaneously combusted as it broke down.
Two fire engines were sent and no other damage was reported.
Garden waste should be stored away from homes to avoid any blaze spreading, according to a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman.
The crews had left by about 8pm.
