Fire experts have issued a warning after a dishwasher caught alight.
A family in Sittingbourne was woken just after 11pm last night by a smoke alarm.
Two fire crews went to Peregrine Drive and used breathing apparatus while putting the fire out.
No casualties were reported.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The residents, who were asleep at the time, were alerted to the flames by a sounding smoke alarm."
He added: "The level of smoke damage to the rest of the house was reduced because the kitchen door was kept shut."
Firefighters used a high-pressure fan to clear away the smoke.
It is believed the fire was caused by a fault in the dishwasher.
Firefighters were at the house for 45 minutes.
Experts have since issued the following safety reminders to anyone using a dishwasher:
* Do not overload a dishwasher. This can lead to overheating and leaks.
* Follow manufacturer's instructions about positioning and ventilating the machine.
* Clean filters and other serviceable parts to prevent blockages and wear.
* Use recommended tablets and powders to prolong the life of your dishwasher.
* Don't leave it running overnight or while you are out of the house.
