Wedding shop's stock taken by bailiffs

by Hayley Robinson

The owners of a new bridal shop have been thrown out of their town premises – reportedly for not paying the rent.

UK Brides Ltd opened its doors to customers at 51 High Street, Sittingbourne, five weeks ago.

But last week, the building’s landlords Bridport Capital called in bailiffs to remove the firm’s stock.

According to Bridport, UK Brides had failed to pay a month’s rent which was due four days earlier.

Police were also called to the premises to prevent a breach of the peace from occurring.

A spokesman said: "Officers did not remove anything from the shop; they were merely assisting the bailiffs.

"Nobody was arrested."

The shop hit the headlines last month when it was targeted by disgruntled customers of Brides of Ashford which went into liquidation in May – leaving 300 outstanding orders.

Some of those affected visited Sittingbourne after rumours circulated that Brides of Ashford owner, Sharon Keates, was behind UK Brides.

However, Mrs Keates – who was declared bankrupt in November 2010 – claimed the store had nothing to do with her and was being run by her ex-partner Steve Sanford.

A Bridport spokesman said: "I never met them, as I say the rent was due and they didn’t pay it. It was a mistake letting them into the building. They’ve gone and I’ve now got the trouble of finding a new tenant. It’s as simple as that."

Attempts to contact Mr Sanford and Mrs Keates for comment, were unsuccessful.

The Grade II listed building, which underwent a two-year revamp under the guidance of English Heritage, is listed on Bridport’s website as being available to rent on flexible terms for £169 per week.
