One teacher has already mapped out her summer holidays. Andrea Birchall, who teaches science at Fulston Manor School, flies to Ghana on July 27, to help the Thrive Africa project.

During her four-week stay, she will help renovate libraries and build schools for the villagers of Kumasi and Bolgatanga.

Andrea, 23, said: “I love travelling and have always wanted to teach in Africa, but never thought this would be possible due to term-time commitments.

“However, when I found out about Thrive Africa and saw the dates, I knew this was a perfect opportunity to be able to make a difference to people who really need our help.

"I’m so looking forward to reading stories to the children and being able to see a school spring into life.”

As part of the Aylesford women’s rugby team and a keen footballer, she is already fit enough for the expedition.

However, she does need to raise £995 in sponsorship. As a result, she is planning to run a marathon in June when she returns home to Ireland, plus various other events.
