Jeremy Procter measures the elements at his home in Cobham Avenue, Sittingbourne, using a Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station, which gives him accurate, daily information.
Using sensors linked to his computer, the equipment gives rainfall, temperature, humidity and air pressure readings. Mr Procter also has an anemometer – a wind-speed indicator – on a mast on his roof.
The sensors record data and wirelessly feed it to a control box. He can then access a programme that enables him to monitor, interpret and analyse the results.
He said: “February’s weather can be summed up as wet, mild and windy. We had rainfall on 21 days, with the total amount over four times that of February 2013.
“As I reported earlier, the wettest day, February 15, saw total rainfall for that day almost exceeding the monthly total for February 2012.
“With prevailing winds from a south westerly direction for almost the whole month it was very mild, with no frosts.
“The average mean temperature for the month was nearly 4C higher than February 2013.
“That is a really significant increase, though right at the end of the month, temperatures did drop to more ‘normal’ figures for February.
“This month has also been very windy, with the highest gust of 45mph being recorded around midnight on the 14th.
“The cause of this weather has been a very strong jetstream following a more southerly track and resulting Atlantic lows affecting more of the south of the UK than normal.
“As a result of the Atlantic being slightly warmer, these lows have been much deeper, with resultant higher wind speeds and greater rainfall.”
