A man who suffered a fit while working on 10ft high scaffolding was saved from falling by his workmate.
Emergency services were called to Kemsley Fields Business Park, in Barge Way, at 7.15pm last Thursday after the man collapsed while helping a colleague put up a new business sign for Pyramid Cutters, a packing and design company which has just relocated to the business park from Sheerness.
To stop the man falling from the scaffolding, the sign fitter’s colleague held him during his fit, while Brian Rowe, managing director of Pyramid Cutters, dialled 999.
Although the man was conscious when the firefighters arrived at the scene, the paramedics decided he should not climb down the scaffolding in case he had another fit.
As a result the crew were faced with the difficult task of getting the man on a long board and lowering him down to the ambulance crew who were waiting to treat him.
Neil Ryder, watch manager at Sittingbourne fire station, said: "It was raining and the scaffolding was moveable so we wheeled it into the unit to keep the man dry.
"Two of the crew went up and assessed him with guidance from the ambulance crew.
"They then put him on a spinal board.
"We were going to use a fork-lift truck to lower him down safely but that packed up on us so we went to plan B and used the work tables in the unit like stairs and lowered him down that way.
"It was an unusual rescue for us and we certainly had to think a little bit about what we were going to do."
The crew left the scene just before 8pm.
