A late goal denied Sittingbourne a share of the spoils in their Ryman League Division 1 South match at Worthing on Saturday.

Worthing struck the winner with 10 minutes remaining to inflict a first league defeat of the season on the Brickies.

Sittingbourne's Billy Manners put a third-minute effort just over the bar and at the other end keeper Deren Ibrahim did well to deny Ben Johnson as Worthing were also a threat going forward.

Matt Bourne (pictured) and Jon Neal both had efforts blocked midway through the opening half, while Jamie Brotherton had a great chance for the hosts but blasted over.

Bourne again came close but he headed wide from Colin Richmond’s corner.

Just after the hour mark, Elie Kayembe broke down the right and fed an unmarked Hicham Akhazzan but with the goal at his mercy he slipped and the chance went begging.

Worthing scored the decisive goal on 80 minutes. Brotherton rode a challenge from Joe Dowley and crossed for Gavin Gordon, who converted with a tap-in.

Sittingbourne host former manager Steve Lovell’s Ashford side on Tuesday evening, kick-off 7.45pm.
