A motorist had a lucky escape after a hazard warning triangle was thrown from a motorway bridge by yobs.

The incident happened between 3.45pm and 3.50pm on Tuesday, June 8, as the 54-year-old man, from Hersden, was driving his Peugeot 107 along the M2 towards Canterbury.

He had just passed the Stockbury roundabout turn off when he spotted two children on a bridge over the motorway. As he approached it the children threw the triangle which hit his nearside head lamp, the passenger door and wheel arch causing £200 worth of damage.

The two children, both boys thought to be aged between 12 and 13, then ran off.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sittingbourne Neighbourhood Inspector Phil Hibben said: "This may have seemed like a harmless prank but it could have had devastating consequences.

"The triangle could have quite easily hit the windscreen of the Peugeot, struck the driver and caused a horrendous accident.

"The M2 would have been busy at this time of day and I urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact us."

Three weeks ago yobs threw a large stone as a motorist drove his Volkswagen Caddy van under the bridge near the Bobbing turn off on the A249 Maidstone bound carriageway.

The incident happened at about 3.30pm on Monday, May 24.

The windscreen of the vehicle cracked but didn’t shatter.

The driver, who was left shaken, claimed the stone was thrown by two teenage boys on the bridge.

They are described as between 14 and 17 years old. One was wearing a pale yellow T-shirt and the other a white T-shirt with writing on it.
