Families attending a Christmas lights switch-on became “fearful” after a group of youths began causing havoc with physical and verbal attacks.
The annual event in Sittingbourne High Street took place on Saturday (November 16).
Those attending witnessed a group of around 10 teenagers throwing water bottles at an entertainment act, knocking barriers over and riding their bikes at members of the public.
The window at Shoe Zone in the High Street was also smashed by the louts with a trolley, while some market holders reported theft.
Police were called to reports some teenagers were causing a nuisance and acting anti-socially but by the time they arrived the suspects had left.
Secretary for the Sittingbourne Christmas Lights and Sleigh Rounds, Nikki Bone, witnessed the “disgusting” behaviour and says it has made the team consider hiring security for next year.
The 34-year-old said: “I am fearful for our volunteers’ and marshalls’ safety and concerned by the lack of policing around.
“It’s frustrating because we are trying to bring something nice to our community and they are giving the event a bad name.”
Meanwhile, Matilda Johnson was trying to enjoy the event when she spotted the trouble.
The 37-year-old said: “We should not have to tolerate windows being smashed, theft, verbal and physical attacks, putting much younger children and elderly people in a position of fear and threat in their own hometown.
“It’s completely out of hand and people are scared to go out because you will have a group of 10 of them going about and terrorising people.”
Matilda is calling for an increased police presence stating these children completely “dominate” the area.
But both Nikki and Matilda told KentOnline that this sort of behaviour is a regular occurrence in the town and happens "almost everyday".
The owners of one business, Trade Counter, also shared CCTV on Facebook of three boys demonstrating disruptive behaviour.
In the video, one boy wears a face covering, while another can be seen grabbing the head of a flower and throwing it on the shop floor.
A police spokesman said: “The suspects had left before the arrival of the constables and enquiries are now under way to identify those responsible.”
