Sittingbourne’s Shane Byrne has it all to do in this year’s British Superbike Championship after a crash at Brands Hatch on Monday.

Byrne finished fourth in race one but crashed out on lap 25 in race two and trails leader Leon Haslam by 73 points.

His retirement left the door open for Luke Mossey to complete a win double – having gained his debut BSB victory earlier in the day.

Chasing Mossey and Christian Iddon, Byrne lost it at Clearways forcing Haslam to taking avoiding action. Byrne's team-mate, Glenn Irwin, also crashed out at the same spot on an afternoon to forget for the Be Wiser Ducati team.

Mossey, who led Haslam from lap three of race two beat Iddon into second place with Haslam third.

Byrne, who was unable to race in the first round at Donington Park due to concussion, qualified in fourth for race one.

Pole position went to James Ellison after breaking the qualifying record on Sunday. Mossey and Haslam both completed the front row.

Byrne fell back to eighth as Ellison took an early lead, closely followed by Haslam and Mossey.

Ellison was off after hitting the kerb at Druids on lap 12, leaving the track open for Mossey, with Haslam and and Iddon battling for second. Mossey held on to take the win, with Haslam edging out Iddon and Byrne just missing a podium finish.

The next round of the series is at Oulton Park on April 29-May 1.
