Kent Kings have their first win since promotion to the Championship.

History was made at Central Park last night as Kings came from behind to beat Plymouth Gladiators 49-41.

How appropriate that Ben Morley - one of the club’s original line-up in 2013 - should take centre stage on such a special occasion for the club.

Morley - the club’s record points scorer - produced one of his finest moments in an Invicta race jacket, a match-winning paid 13 points.

For much of the match, the Devonians looked the more likely winners.

Bar Kent briefly drawing level, they led all the way until heat 12, when a 4-2 from Dan Gilkes and Paul Starke put the hosts in front for the first time.

Plymouth guest Danny King - who comes from Maidstone - was in sizzling form for the visitors early on, and went on to score 12 points.

But Kent had their own rider replacement star in Steve Worrall, guesting for Cameron Heeps, whose three heat wins led to a paid 16 for the Poole man.

Worrall was also the first man to deny King and the comeback was well and truly on when a resurgent Gilkes stormed from behind to take the lead over Aussie Zach Cook, followed by Starke in heat 12.

From six points down just three heats earlier, Kent suddenly led 37-35.

Another brilliant win by man-of-the-meeting Morley in the penultimate heat put Kent on the brink.

And there was unconfined joy from another capacity crowd when Worrall and Scott Nicholls (11+2) made it a third 5-1 in six heats to give Kent an eight-point victory and secure all the match points.
