Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis thinks it's only a matter of time before the club's attacking players start regularly banging in the goals

Nick Davis reckons it’s only a matter of time before Sittingbourne’s attacking players start regularly banging in the goals.

The ninth-placed Brickies have collected eight points from six Isthmian South East fixtures after drawing 0-0 with Chatham at the weekend.

They have, however, only scored six goals in those games. But recently-signed midfielder Kieron McCann, wingers Jason Banton and Alex Addai and striker Bagasan Graham have plenty of higher-league experience between them.

“These forward players have done it in higher leagues,” said Sittingbourne manager Davis.

“I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they start producing goals at this level.”

Another recent arrival, striker Mario Quiassaca, had a decent debut, forcing a couple of good saves from Chatham keeper Ben Bridle-Card.

“He’s a threat. He’s a livewire, for sure,” said Davis.

“We have certainly missed that. His work-rate was immense.

“Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before he starts scoring for us.”

Two of Sittingbourne’s league goals have been scored by right-back Donvieve Jones, who found the net again against Chatham only to be denied by the offside flag, and Davis is delighted to see Jones chipping in, too.

He said: “I speak to James Collins [in charge of Bowers having worked with Jones at Faversham] a lot and he says he only got one goal for him over two years.

“He sort of said ‘Can I get in the box and join in’ and he’s been exceptional for us, really. He hit the bar against Burgess Hill as well [as scoring a late equaliser].

“He wants to score, he has the desire to get on the end of things, and it’s working. Long may that continue but we can’t rely on a defender to score our goals.”

Sittingbourne have only played one club outside of Kent in their first six league fixtures - starting at Whitehawk before matches against Ramsgate, Faversham, Sheppey, Hythe and now Chatham, sandwiched between various cup ties.

So Davis, whose team beat Corinthian 1-0 in the Velocity Trophy on Tuesday despite playing the match with nine men for more than an hour after Lewis Chambers and Addai were both sent off, is looking forward to this Saturday’s match away to Haywards Heath.

He said: “I’ll be honest, I’ll be pleased to play a Sussex team!”

The match against last season’s play-off semi-finalists, who are on the same number of points as Sittingbourne but have played one league game more, is scheduled to begin a run of four away fixtures in six for them.

“We need the league games coming to get some continuity going and some consistency,” the Brickies boss said.

“We’re in October and have played six league games - I have never known anything like it.

“The league hasn’t settled yet. You can win a game and be fifth or third or lose a couple of games and then be right at the bottom.

“Let’s see how we are after 10 or 12 games, that’s where the mark normally is.”

Defender Ben Gorham scored the Brickies' only goal at Corinthian.

Sittingbourne visit Cray Valley in the league on Tuesday.
