Sittingbourne’s new joint-managers are targeting a slice of FA Cup history in their first week in full charge of the Brickies.

Matt Wyatt and Nick Davis, appointed on a permanent basis last weekend, take Bourne to Thamesmead in the second qualifying round on Saturday.

Sittingbourne haven’t gone beyond that stage for 16 years, when they reached the fourth qualifying round and held Hereford to a 2-2 draw at Central Park.

Good results in Ryman League, Division 1 South earned Wyatt and Davis the permanent manager’s job but now they have cup glory on their minds.

Wyatt said: “We’d love to get to the first round proper of the FA Cup. It’s a big ask and we’ll need a little bit of luck.

“We go to Thamesmead as underdogs. Not many people will be expecting us to go to a Ryman Premier side, away from home and win.

“Me and Nick expect us to win and I hope the players expect to. A lot of people will have it down as a Thamesmead win. That’s good.”

Bourne then host Ebbsfleet in the Kent Senior Cup second round on Tuesday.

Wyatt said: “It’s a huge week for the club. Playing away to a Ryman Premier side and then at home to a Conference South side, these are the games you want to be involved in.”

There was no hesitation when Wyatt and Davis were asked to take over from Jim and Danny Ward.

Wyatt said: “We’ve taken over a good football club with good supporters and good potential. I’d like us to at least be in mid-table.

“That’s not saying we don’t want to get into the play-offs, of course we do but we need to be realistic after the start we had.”
