Sittingbourne manager Nick Davis on goalless draw with Chatham Town in Isthmian South East

Boss Nick Davis was pleased to see another dimension to his Sittingbourne side on Saturday during their entertaining Isthmian South East goalless draw with Chatham.

In-form Donvieve Jones had a goal disallowed while away goalkeeper Ben Bridle-Card made some fine saves at Woodstock to deny the ninth-placed Brickies all three points.

But Chats had their opportunities too, hitting the woodwork once in either half, while home goalkeeper Matt Cafer made a stunning save to thwart Chatham player-assistant manager Danny Kedwell.

“We had a little bit of a different dimension to us today,” said Davis, who started new signings Kieron McCann and Mario Quiassaca.

“With the lads that we had up front, we changed formation, first half, and I thought we were able to stretch them a bit - something we haven’t done in the past - with the pace that Mario gives us and Bagusan [Graham].

“Mario’s rounded the keeper and I think he’s made a brilliant recovery save. A point is a point at the end of the day from another derby.”

In the league, Sittingbourne have only played one club outside of Kent in their first six fixtures so far - starting at Whitehawk before matches against Ramsgate, Faversham, Sheppey, Hythe and now Chatham, which have been sandwiched between various cup ties.

After his team's latest derby clash, Davis reflected: “It’s another Kent derby, isn’t it? I think that’s five in a row we have had in the league!

“They are tough and there was a decent crowd here [of 382]. I think the neutral would say that a draw is a fair result but, if I look at who has made the more saves, it’s certainly their goalkeeper. He has made a brilliant save in the first half and two excellent saves in the second half.

“To be fair, Matt Cafer has made a brilliant save for us as well. I think a draw was probably a fair result if I’m being brutally honest.”

Former Folkestone and Margate midfielder McCann had made a bright start but had to come off in the first half.

Sittingbourne’s manager said: “I thought he did well. He played in that hole and found himself some good positions.

“He brings a lot of quality and, when he gets on the ball, he makes things happen. It was a shame for him, really.

“That was when we were on top but there were a couple of enforced changes we had to make today. Near the end, we were restricted, we couldn’t make any more changes because they had already been made."

Explaining why McCann was substituted, Davis added: "He’s just cut the inside of his mouth. It wouldn’t stop bleeding so, as a precaution, we decided to take him off.”

The only time either side found the net away keeper Bridle-Card saved well to deny striker Quiassaca a debut goal and Jones stroked home on 16 minutes but the linesman’s flag denied right-sided player Jones.

On the incident, Davis, whose team will visit Corinthian on Tuesday night in the Velocity Trophy, said: “I don’t know, I was too far away.

“It was a brilliant save again, wasn’t it from Ben to deny Mario? Then Donvieve would have got his fifth goal of the season.

“We’ll see on the video whether it was [offside] or not.”
